Short-Video-Based Microlearning in Arabic Mahārahtul Kalām Learning: A Literature Review of Engagement and Speaking Anxiety

Short-video platforms have expanded opportunities to deliver compact audiovisual language input, yet brief duration alone does not transform a video into pedagogically coherent microlearning. This article examines how short-video-based microlearning can support Mahārah al-Kalām while negotiating two variables that are often treated separately: learner engagement and speaking anxiety. The study employed qualitative library research through an integrative literature review and thematic-conceptual synthesis of 50 verified journal articles published. The corpus was selected on the basis of topical relevance and verified title, DOI, journal, publication year, and indexing status. Data were reduced, grouped into four evidence clusters, coded thematically, compared across methodological and linguistic contexts, and synthesized into a conceptual framework. The review indicates that short videos can strengthen access, attentional focus, rehearsal, and willingness to participate when organized around a specific micro-objective and followed by oral production, feedback, and revision. However, views, enjoyment, and task completion are inadequate proxies for speaking development. Short-video tasks may lower anxiety through controllable, repeatable, and low-stakes practice, but may also intensify fear of negative evaluation when recordings are public, permanent, or competitively assessed. The proposed framework remains conceptual and requires empirical testing in Arabic-language learning settings.
