Effectiveness of Takrīr in the Tahfīẓ Program on Arabic Pronunciation among Madrasah Tsanawiyyah Students

Pronunciation ability in Qur’anic recitation is an important aspect of tahfīẓ programs, as accurate makhārij al-ḥurūf, mad, fluency, and intonation contribute to accurate recitation. The takrīr method emphasizes systematic repetition accompanied by modeling and direct correction, which may help improve students’ pronunciation ability. This study aimed to analyze changes in pronunciation ability in Qur’anic recitation before and after the implementation of the takrīr method and to determine the magnitude of the improvement effect among students at MTs Al Furqon Kaliwungu Kudus. This quantitative research method with a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design. The sample consisted of 32 students participating in the tahfīẓ program, selected using total sampling. The takrīr intervention was implemented over three days, with a duration of 30 minutes per day, using Surah Al-Fatihah verses 1–7 as the learning material. Pronunciation ability was assessed based on four aspects: makhārij al-ḥurūf, mad, fluency, and intonation. Data were analyzed using a paired-samples t-test and Cohen’s d effect size. The results showed that the mean pronunciation score increased from 65.36 at pre-test to 82.41 at post-test, representing an improvement of 17.05 points. All aspects improved, with mad showing the greatest increase of 17.44 points. The paired-samples t-test indicated a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores (t = 120.971; df = 31; p < 0.001), with a 95% confidence interval of 16.77–17.34. The magnitude of the improvement based on Cohen’s d was 21.38, indicating a very large effect. The implementation of the takrīr method was associated with improved pronunciation ability in Qur’anic recitation among students and demonstrated a very large effect. The takrīr method has potential as a structured pronunciation practice strategy in tahfīẓ programs. However, because this study employed a one-group pre-test–post-test design without a control group, the observed improvement cannot be attributed entirely to the takrīr method.
